What Makes You Feel Better?
If you have always lived in the same place and kept the same lighting set-up, you may not realize how much changing the lighting in a room can change the entire feel of it. In fact, lighting alone can create completely different atmospheres without you having to do any additional decorating.
Some of us need a lot of light in any given room. This might be because our eyesight is bad, or it might just be our general preference. If you want or need a lot of light in a room, the best way to get that is to use overhead lights. These could be ceiling mounted fixtures - and often the coverings on these can be quite elaborate and decorative - or you could install ceiling chandeliers or ceiling fans which have lights on them as well.
Regardless of which kind of ceiling light you choose to use, if it still seems dim or depressing - particularly during the winter months - try changing the kind of light bulbs you use. Most light bulbs are Incandescent, or Tungsten lights. These give off a warmer, yellowish or orange glow that can seem dim or depressing at times. By changing to daylight style bulbs, you'll get light into the room that feels and looks more like natural sunlight. These bulbs also tend to use much less energy, so you'll reduce your electricity bill while making the room brighter at the same time. Note However, some people are sensitive to bright lights, and these daylight style bulbs can seem much too bright and harsh for their taste.
Using overhead lighting will spread the light throughout the room. This alone can make the room seem a little less cozy, but much more active, alive and invigorating. If you'd like a room to have a more cozy, intimate and inviting appeal to it, I'd suggest using table or floor lamps instead of overhead lights. These are especially appealing for making your bedroom appear more romantic. You can still get that cozy and intimate feeling using the daylight style bulbs in your lamps; however it will be enhanced by using standard incandescent bulbs. You can even go with a lower wattage bulb to further enhance the mood.
Floor lamps are excellent for creating a cozy reading corner, and table lamps are best for bedside tables. Both are fine choices for creating or adding mood and elegance in almost any area of the room too. One other type of lighting that is a fantastic choice for creating a dramatic presentation is called picture lighting. These are designed to spotlight a work of art hung on your wall, but they're also excellent decorating choices for highlighting an indoor fountain or statue too.
So when choosing new lighting for a room, think about the decorating effects you want that lighting to have, but also consider the mood you want to create, as well as the amount and types of lighting you and your family
needs and prefers.
